Since the airing of Living Newfoundland and Labrador: I have had numerous inquiries about making homemade soap. Home made soap is easy, but one has to use caution when making soap because of the chemical reaction of Lye. It can severely burn your skin even at the trace stage. Extereme caution should be used and it should be done in the absence of children as the trace stage of soap and look and smell like pudding to a child.
It is one of the least expensive hobbies with fantastic results. The possiblities for making soap are endless. I have the supplies you will need to make a basic Cold Process soap like the demonstration on CBC NL Living. It’s like making your first cake from scratch. The feeling is extraordinary. That particular soap is a basic kitchen/pantry soap. It is designed for use in the kitchen to help eliminate kitchen smells from your hands: i.e. garlic and onion. If you are looking for a skin soothing product then read on:
I love making homemade items. Everything from canning, soaping, candle making. I’ve even made my own clothes, although not recently. It seems it’s less expensive to buy them these days. On the other hand… soap making is very cost effective and once you’ve perfected it, you’ll be happy you started and will quickly become addicted. Your skin will soon look and feel much better.
I have decided to put together several soap kits. This will help you decide as a new soaper whether you want to continue and the cost won’t put you in the hole. If you were to buy the items separately, you’d be spending much more money than I would be comfortable with. If you decide that soaping isn’t for you then, you will have had the chance to make a small batch and you won’t go broke doing it. I have a feeling you’ll be back for more.
Maybe you don’t want to make soap, but you have a friend who has expressed an interest in the process.
These kits will make a great Christmas present for your crafty friends and the best part is they will most likely share with you, so it’s a win win situation. ;-)

To restore moisture to stubborn popcorn kernels that refuse to pop, fill a one-quart jar three quarters full of the unpopped kernels. Add one tablespoon of water, cover the jar and shake for two to three minutes or until all the water is absorbed. Store the container in a cool place - not the refrigerator - for two to three days before popping.BellyBytes.com Did You Know 1/12/2008
